Hotel Staff Evaluation

The way you carry on periodical evaluations may directly result in a positive or negative perform of your staff. The staff should find the evaluation interesting and challenging, not just another paper to fill or a plain waste of time, but above all it must be done by you.

Prepare and evaluate yourself

In order to perform at your best during the evaluation and reinforce your image and position as a leader, be sure to know more about the subject than those you will evaluate. Create a map for the current and future evaluations, draw timelines and set goals so you and the staff are prepared to make the needed commitments and improve where needed.

How to remove the tediousness of the process

Set a comfortable location, not necessarily your office where the staff might feel intimidated, and a reasonable time for the interview, using the same for each employee. Include some space for comments and suggestions, be specific and drive the questions to your hotel guests’ point of view. Avoid reprimands and instead focus on the positive and especially on improvement from previous evaluations.

Follow-up and training

If you include SOP in the evaluation make sure to inform the staff if and when changes are made and include those in the next evaluation, and keep in mind that the best way to get your staff sharp and ready for evaluations and to provide great service is to train them. You should personally put time into training of staff at all levels in your hotel, they will appreciate it and your guests will certainly notice it.
